The results of the much-awaited fight are in: Floyd Mayweather defeated Manny Pacquiao Saturday night in a 12-round fight in Las Vegas.
Hailed as the most hyped boxing match of the past few years, the Maywether/Pacquiao match started slow, but ended with Mayweather winning by a unanimous decision from the judges. In a moment of dissent, after the fight ended, Pacquiao remarked, “I thought I won the fight.” The victory gives Mayweather the title of undisputed champion of the welterweight boxing world.
For Mayweather, the match was a defense of his undefeated record and he was the favorite to win. As the fight was a bout to start, pay-per-view subscriptions to the broadcast almost crashed the system and led to cable providers requesting a delay, so that they could handle the technicalities.
The match was the fruit of years of negotiations between the two fighters, and was the center of tremendous amounts of money being exchanged, in the form of bets that might’ve totaled $80 million. The purse for the match is estimated to be around $300 million, with Mayweather getting 60% and the remainder going to Pacquiao. Tickets to the event were sold for as much as $40,955 per seat. A number of celebrities came to watch the fight, including Paris Hilton, Jimmy Kimmel, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Michael Jordan.
Pacquiao (36-years-old) is famous the world over, and especially in his native country of the Philippines, where he grew up poor and eventually became a congressman in the wake of his boxing fame. The 38-year-old Mayweather is a native of Michigan, earned a boxing bronze medal in the 1996 Olympics and then went on to become the world’s highest-paid athlete in 2014. His estimated net worth to date is $280 million.
